These four works were created for the group show “Losing Control: Guns, government, and group think” curated by Arlette Hernandez. Each piece was specifically created for this show and reflects on issues related to gun violence and the spaces we typically assume/idealize as safe, even when we know they are not. Within each piece the number of figurative elements relates to a statistic or mass shooting event, and there are hatch marks (slightly hidden) which relate to the numbers in 2019 regarding the spaces each piece is reflecting on. Additionally, an actual chair pulled from those kinds of spaces rests in front of each of the 2D works. For me, exploring the “architecture of violence” as one of the gallery interns brilliantly put it, goes hand in hand with the policy work that both aids and hinders safety.
