Building off an existing installation, and ongoing work of Caldas, Four Letter Word and Out of Context, Jessica Caldas and Hez Stalcup explored the relationship between language and behavior with particular focus on Female Sexuality within installation and dance. Four Letter Word is based around large, cotton filled textile letters which spell out the words Cunt, Slut, and Bitch, Porn Rag incorporates the use of auditory text - internet comments taken from negative and positive reactions to the piece read aloud and recorded.
In Porn Rag, the artists are using their own histories as a starting point and then navigating the commonality of community experience, the Artists move around, through, within and beneath the cumbersome and familiar size and weight of these four letter words. Using literal and physical representation of words and text to illustrate the remains and imprint of early, if not first, sexual and gendered experiences, and the ongoing dialog of the anonymous voice in media.
At Roots Week 2015 I performed an edited solo version of Porn Rag with permission from Hez Stalcup. Photos taken by Michelle Ivette Gomez. The edited performanced included a 6 minute video projection of the first half of the original and a shortened version of the dance in front of the video.
